Mini Interview
A friend of mine conducted a mini interview with me over email for a school project at Mohawk College. I thought it was interesting so I’m blogging this.
1) Why did you choose this occupation or go into this line of work?
I discovered that I enjoyed this work and had some skill in it while working on campus one summer. I’ve always enjoyed working with computers.
2) What pathway did you follow to this job? (ie College University or other training)
I chose a business major at Redeemer University College and I took many computer science courses. My final year I made a small business plan and after I completed my studies I started my company.
3) What do feel are the key skills to be able to perform well and what advice would you give to someone interested in this occupation?
You need the ability to be teach yourself. In high tech you need to be constantly learning. Problem solving skills are central as well as the ability to think about many abstract concepts.
4) What is your typical day like?
- reading news
- responding to emails, telephone calls, a lot of back and forth with clients
- software coding and design
- occasional meeting with a client
- possibly some server maintenance, security updates
- some graphic design, web site layout
5) What do you think is the future outlook for this type of work/industry?
- Internet technology is a great enabler for small business. I see a slow increase in the number of 1-3 person companies in this field.
- There is a massive amount of collaborative open source software development happening world wide. I think we will see even more companies adopting open source practices instead of a traditional proprietary model.
- Geographic location is becoming irrelevant due to the Internet.
